Welcome to my blogpost. In this blogpost I’ll show you the Pokémon party I throw for my daughter and her friends. We did this party together with her friend Lore and her mother Natasja. So a great thanks to Natasja for helping me out (Invitation, decoration, printing, helping, …).
Are you ready for “How to become a Pokémon trainer” party. This party was made for my daughter her friends around the age of 9.
Throwing a party can be overwhelming, so I hope this blogpost will give you inspiration and motivation to throw your own birthday party. Are you ready to organize a children’s birthday party?
Pokémon party invitation
Every party starts with an invitation. For the invitation, Natasja made nice Pokéball cards to give to the children. So that is a great start to this party.
Do you need help organizing with your party. Just ask help of a professional organizer. Only for Belgium and the Netherlands.
Pokémon party decorations
For the Pokémon party decorations, we bought some standard Pokémon flags, plates, balloons and tablesheets from the online stores. As you can see in the pictures below.
We did this party in a small hall of an old building as you also can see in the pictures. This hall was surrounded with enough playground for the children to play inside and outside.
Lore made also some awesome Pokémon drawings to put on the wall.
We also put ballons and arrows in the street towards the party area. All ofcourse in Pokémon theme.
Pokémon party food and drinks
We used standard drinks like water, lemonade, Cola and Ice Tea for this party, because we already had Pokémon straws and cups to fit the theme.
For dinner we ate the Belgium french frites with snacks that every child loves.
First we wanted to make a Pokémon ball Pizza, but it wasn’t convenient to make in the hall we rented. Also Pokémon ball cupcakes we wanted to make, but it was too much of an effort at that moment. I hope it inspires you in making Pokémon theme dinner.
Pokémon Party snack bar.
For the little breaks in between, I made a Pokémon party snack bar with snacks in Pokémon theme. Simple Orange chip slices will become Charmander teeth . Gum pieces will become Pokémon gums and so on. For these candy station I made personal Pokémon candy names and placed in front of the candy.
Pokémon Party gifts
Behind the Pokémon snack bar, we prepared the gifts that every child may take home after the party. We had the Pokémon bags from an online store and we put in a Pokémon card, a candy bag with a picture of my daughter Emma and Lore and a Pokémon. A Pokémon trainer certificate that they earn after playing the Pokémon trainer game.
Pokémon entertainment on the side
If there is bad weather, I printed some Pokémon drawings from the internet , so they can color them. This is also a good activity when waiting to arrival of all children.
A football; When you give children a football they can entertain themselves. This ideal to fill in the death moments, like preparing dinner or preparing the next game.
Pokémon picture taken
If you have the Pokémon game app on your phone, you could take pictures with their favorite Pokémon on it. It’s a nice activity. We wanted to put it also in the gift bag, but we had a problem with the printer. So we gave it a couple of days later at school.
We had music from the Pokémon theme in the beginning of the party, after that we had some kids music all around playing in the back. Without music no party.

How to become a Pokémon trainer game
We made 4 groups. In each group we had about 4 children. They have to play 10 games on how they can proove that they could be a Pokémon trainer. They play 2 groups against each other. So group 1 and 2 play each other and start with game 1. Group 3 and 4 play each other and start with game 5 for example. One group can win an Pokémon for their team if they win the game battle. Those Pokémons they will need for the finale game the Pokémon battle fight. This game we will explain later.
Dividing the groups.
For dividing the groups, we had cards with each card holding one of the 4 the differtent Pokémons. So we had a team Pikachu, a team Charmander, a team Bulbasaur and a team Squirtle.
Game 1: Leaning how to throw Pokémon balls
Every Pokémon trainer need to know how to throw a decent Pokémon ball that’s why they need to train these skills.
- A big bag
- 20 plastic balls (like from a plastic bowling game or ball bath)
From a 5 meter distance one team must try to have as much balls in the bag as possible. So one child of the team stands there with a plastic bag to catch the balls of their team . The rest of the team are throwing every turn a ball in the bag if possible.
The team with the most balls in the bag, is the winner and deserves a Pokémon. (This is a card with a Pokémon of their theme on, like a Squirtle, Pikachu,…)
Game 2: Testing their Pokémon trainer strength
Every Pokémon trainer must be fit to go on a Pokémon journey, that’s why we need to excercise the strength of Pokémon trainer.
We had little bags with different weights inside and every team must lift a bag with straight arms. So person 1 of team one, starts againt person 1 of team 2. When the first person couldn’t do it anymore, the next person of the team takes over untill the last one drops her arm.
The team who held up the longest is the winner and deserves a Pokémon (see the card, explained in game 1)
Game 3: Testing their Pokémon anatomy
Before starting a Pokémon journey, you need to know how a Pokémon works and how it is made.
We made a picture of a Duplo Pokémon Pikachu and we have Duplo building blocks.
Each team chooses a representative that will build the Pokémon with Duplo building blocks according to the picture. The team who made it first correctly is the winner and deserves a Pokémon. The other members of the theme will cheer and motivate.
Game 4: Have some insight in the world of Pokémons
The next game will test your reflexes and knowledge of the Pokémon world you are going to discover.
This game is based on the Mastermind game. We draw 4 circles on the ground in a row for each team. So 2 rows with 4 circles. In every circle we lay down a drawing of Pokémon.
We have made a solution beforehand on how the Pokémon must lay down, like with his head to the left, right, under or above.
Now the kids takes turn throwing a dice. If the dice saids one, they may turn picture one in a direction of choosing an we will say correct or not correct. If the dice saids 2 , they can turn picture 2 and so on.
If the dice saids 5 or 6 they must run to the end, turn nothing and run back.
After each dice trow, the next kid can trow the dice. The team who has the first Pokémon in the correct order will win the game and deserves a Pokémon for their team.
Game 5: Searching and looking for Pokémons
When you are going to find Pokémons in the wild, we need to train you on how to find the Pokémons and where they are most likely to find in the wild.
We hang up differtent Pokémons in the area, with there CP power on it. The kids get a little Pokémon box with Pokémon that they need to find. If they have found it, they need to write the CP power on it. The theme who comes in first with all the correct Pokémons CP’s wins a Pokémon for the theme.
Now it is time for a break.
Game 6: Preparing for a battle in a arena
When you are discovering the world as a Pokémon trainer, you will meet other Pokémon trainers who will battle you and your Pokémon into a fight. That’s why we are preparing you for a battle of Pokémons.
We draw with crayons a “4 in a row” game on the ground. Instead of the colors yellow and red, we use Pokémon papers. The one with the first 4 Pokémons of their team on a row wins. This can be vertical, diagonal or horizontal. Each member of the team take turn placing a Pokémon on the field. The winning team deserves a Pokémon.
Game 7: Lean how to catch Pokémons
After you learn how to throw Pokéballs, searching and finding Pokémons, battling Pokémons. You also need to lean how to catch a Pokémon.
This is a standard bowling game to play. We Put different Pokémon on the cones. The team with the most cones touches is the winner and deserves a Pokémon.
Game 8: Testing the knowledge of the Pokémon world
As a Pokémon trainer you will learn a lot discovering the world of Pokémon, but you need the basics to get you started to become the best Pokémon trainer in the world.
This is a basic Pokémon quiz with 10 questions. Theory and do questions. If someone of a team knows the answer they must run to the wall. The one who runs firt to the wall answers the question. If it’s correct that team wins a point. The do questions can earn more points than theory questions.
The team with the most points wins a Pokémon.
Game 9: Trusting your Pokémon and the world
As a Pokémon trainer you must earn trusts of your Pokémons and fellow compagnions, that’s why we need to practise your trust of your team mates. You will not face the world alone, there always someone to help you.
We made a Pikachu Pinata. Every member of the team takes turns. They blinfold one member and he or she must put the Pikachu tail on the correct place of the Pikachu. Because he’s blindfolded, he or she must go on the help of their team members. The team with the most correct pins wins a Pokémon.
Game 10: Learn how the Pokéstop works
As Pokémon trainer you will need some supplies like Potion, Pokéballs and so on during your trip. Some places are calles Pokéstops where you can get them for free. We’ll show you how it works.
We made 2 flat cars (see picture) and we made are own ball bath. One member of each team will lay down on the flat car on the opposite sides of the ball bath. Another one of the team holds the leg of the one on the car, they are the stearing wheel. The other member of the teams, must sort the Pokémon balls Person 1 and 2 catch. Person 1 and 2 have a bag to grab as much Pokéballs as needed. Person 3 and 4 of the team sort in differtent bags in color.
This game takes 3 minutes, the team with the most sorted balls in 3 minutes wins the game and deserves a Pokémon for the team.
This game was a huge succes and even on little dead moments, they were amused by the plastic balls.
Now it is time for dinner.
Finale Pokémon game
Every team has won Pokémon for their team. But now comes the big finale. We put the Pokémon cards on a balloon and we put the balloons with a string behind their pants. This is a classical cat and mouse game. We have 4 corners/teams on the playground, now we want to catch as much Pokémon(balloons) of the other team, without losing yours and bring it back to your team corner. The team with the most Pokémon earned is the winning team.
But there is an extra catch, because we as parents are playing team rocket and we could steal Pokémon from each team as well. This game only takes about 2 minutes, because it is a lot of running. : )
At the end of the finally game every child deserves a gift bag with a Pokémon trainer certificate.
I hope you enjoyed this blogpost. If you do, please leave a comment below. I know Emma en Lore and her friends really enjoyed it.
