In a couple of weeks I go shopping with my mother for some clothes and shoes and other stuff as well. I don’t shop very often, once or twice a year and then I make a little trip in shopping heaven and shop in the big city.
We start early to eat breakfast first, then “shop” “shop” “shop” and then we have a nice lunch, then we continue with “shop” “shop” “shop” and then it’s time to go home.
I really love shopping with my mum, she knows what I like and she has an honest opinion. It’s also the ideal comfort time with my mum.
But before I can go shopping, I need to make sure what I have in my closet and what I need. For every item I buy new, an old item needs to go. Therefore I have my 6 rules of what to before you shop for clothes. (And shoes , and underwear, …)
Step 1: Empty your closet
The firs step is to empty your closet into 3 piles. Because at this moment it is spring, so I’m taking a good look of what I have for my summer clothes and I look what I can throw away of my winter clothes. Things I don’t wear anymore I put on the 3th pile to donate or throw away.
3 piles system
- One pile: Summer
- The second pile: Winter
- 3the pile: Sell or donate
Step 2: Clean your closet
When your closet is empty, it’s the ideal time to clean your closet. Yes, also there will grow some dust nests.
Step 3: Organize your closet
After your closet is cleaned, it’s time to organize your clothes. It’s the best way to see what you have and what you need.
Put your hanger backwards, so the next time you clean up, you can easily see what you have worn or what you didn’t, because the things you wear, you will put the hanger forward in the closet. It’s a quick tip.
Organize by color code and/ or length
When you hang back your clothes hang them from light till dark and from short to longest items. It will give a more organized and clean feeling in your closet.
Organize by season
I know it’s not always possible for every closet, but I hang for this spring season everything easy reachable and I put my winter items at the bottom or further away. I don’t put my winter items completely away, but just not so close at reach as my spring summer items.
Make extra free space for empty hangers, so you could put your new clothes after shopping directly in your closet.
Step 4: Sell or donate your clothes
The 3th pile you need to sort if you want to sell or donate the items.
You can make extra cash
When you decide to sell your items online or at a market, you can earn some money, that you can use to shop for your new clothes. Isn’t that nice?
I decided to donate my clothes for charity this time.
Step 5: Write your shoppinglist
Now that your closet has been organized, you can easily see what you need, so write it down and put in your purse, so you have it always on hand, when you go shopping.
Step 6: Look at the fashiontrends
The last step is to look at the latest fashion trends, so you are completely prepared to go shopping in the big city.

With these steps you are fully aware of what you have in your closet. I do this closet cleaning twice a year right before I go shopping. With the list I pay attention of what I have and what I don’t, so it makes it easier to make shopping choices. If you look closely in your closet, you can see a trend of what you always wear, what makes you comfortable. So maybe, it’s time to try something different?
It’s time to shop for clothes! You are ready!
