Hy, you guys.
Do you prep your meals? Or you just go with the flow on the day itself?
I know out of experience that meal planning can avoid the necessary stress, when coming home after a busy day at work. It also ensures that I eat more healthy food, instead of grabbing to quick and easy fat meals out of the freezer or take out.
My approach isn’t perfect, but very doable and achievable in the long run for me, so I think maybe it is also for you?
The 2-week meal plan system
OK, first of all; My system works in a 2-week basis. So in 2 weeks you have 14 days, where 4 days in the weekend.
So I make sure that I have dinner recipes for 8 days. Why 8 days, you might ask?
Well, because sometimes you have leftovers from other dinners and sometimes in the weekends not everyone is at home for dinner and also you maybe eat outside at your kids soccer play or at a party.
Also sometimes you need to buy food in a larger container, so you could use the last days of your 14 days, making mixtures with everything left in the freezer and fridge, so you won’t waste anything.
Choosing from cookbooks and magazines
Ok, don’t you have the feeling as you see a recipe in a magazine or cookbook, that you want to try it, but you actually don’t every make it. Well in my system, you choose 8 dinner recipes from cookbooks or the free magazines from you market store to make the coming weeks.
There are a lot of benefits choosing this method:
- Now you have the chance to make the recipe you always wanted to try.
- If you take it from the warehouse magazines, you have always the food in promotion, so cheaper.
- If you take it from the warehouse magazines, you have always fruit and vegetables from the season, which means fresh and also cheaper.
- If you choose the recipes, you won’t buy to much or too little of something, so you will save money.
- There are also digital magazines and recipes all over the place, so it is easy. They even make suggestions for you.
- You do not have to think the day itself what your going to make for dinner. So you be more relaxed.
I choose besides the 8 dinner recipes, also 1 lunch recipe and one breakfast recipe and 2 or 3 snack recipes to try.
Have you seen my going back to school checklist for parents?
My meal plan system
I choose one healthy home made breakfast recipe to try the first week, for the second week I buy my oatmeal or eggs and bread for standard breakfast. In my video, I use blueberry -oat muffins from Sandra Bekkari.
For lunch I choose this time a healthy soup that I can use the first week and when I freeze some more, also the second week. It’s not only convenient as lunch, but also snack. For the second week, I have canned soup as option and also yoghurt and granola. I know not much special this time : – )
For snacks I made some shredded chicken and hard boiled eggs, because this week I wanted to keep it simple, but sometimes I use recipes like homemade granola bars or chia seed puddings. For the second week, I use store-bought nuts and seeds and store-bought smoothies as snack.
For dinner, I choose 8 recipes for the coming 2 weeks, they change every 2 weeks.
I make sure that I make the recipe for one person more, so I have sometimes leftovers that I can eat the next day as lunch or fast dinner option.
I said it wasn’t an ideal solution, but the feeling that I can make selfmade healthy stuff every two weeks, makes me very happy and proud at myself.
If it is for you doable to make healthy options every week, please go ahead, but for me this is a good working solutions for now.
OK, don’t forget to buy your other stuff that you need, those items I collect on a list on my smartphone, like washing powder and batteries and also drinks.
Collect and Go
OK, when I know what I need to buy, I go on the website of my warehouse and search for every food item and place a collect.
If your warehouse delivers at home, even beter, but I collect my food when I come home from work at the store. You did your shopping online, so you only need to get your goods and put them in your car, they have shopped for you.
They charge an extra fee, but I am more than happy that they shop, it saves me so much time.
I have to admit, that the first 4 times, it will take longer to shop online, because you need to get to know of the website and after some shopping, the website knows what you always order or even do suggestions based on your previous shopping. So you will get faster at it. I takes me know 20 minutes choose the recipes and order online. Very simple.
Ok, I made sure I bought some items to make healthy recipes for snacks, breakfast and lunch, so normally the day after I got my groceries. I prep all my recipes.
I also cut the vegetables for the dinner recipe of the next day. So I spend half a day every 2 weeks prepping for one healthy week options. I’m to lazy to do it for the second week.
For the second week, I use more store-bought options.
Because I have for dinner my chosen 8 recipes, I make sure that every day I cut some vegetables in the morning or the evening before, so I don’t need to cut them all at the evening itself, when I am very hungry. I also try to put every ingredient on the countertop that I will need for that recipe, so I don’t have to hustle things.
Meal planning advantages
Because I meal plan, I eat more healthy and don’t buy food that I do not need. I also make sure that I have no leftovers in those 14 days, because I calculated my leftovers in my system. You spend less money, eat more in season and get the chance to try new recipes every 2 weeks.
So what do you think of my meal planning system? It is something for you?
