21 things you should do this schoolyear to be in a control. This is an ultimate back to school guide that parents can use to start the schoolyear of their children in control and on top of things.
Never forget a date or miss a lunchbox, who doesn’t want that? Have systems set and ready to handle all things concerning the school of your children.
OK, I’m convinced that your children are signed up at a school.
Let just jump right into it!
Half of the vacation period before getting back to school
In the summer vacation, I recommend the following things you should do:
1 Clean and organize your children’s schoolbag
Clean out your kids schoolbags, if you haven’t done this already at the end of previous schoolyear. Even use the vacuum cleaner to get rid of all the crumbs. If the schoolbag isn’t in good shape anymore, donate or throw it away and put it on the shopping list to buy for the next schoolyear.
2 Clean and organize your kids playroom and bedroom
Clean and organize the kids bedrooms and playrooms, yes get rid of all the toys they don’t use anymore. You will be surprised how much garbage you will find, that you can throw away immediately. Also throw away, your kids schoolbooks (In Belgium it is not necessary to keep them in elementary school).
Make sure they have a homework station ready, a place to sit quietly to make their homework after school.
When you are cleaning the children’s room, keep a list of all the things you need to buy or get for the new schoolyear. It’s easier that way.
3 Clean and organize your kids clothes
Clean and organize the kids closet, yes it is big cleaning time. I know it is time consuming, but there is no better moment than summer to do this job. Change the clothes between your children or donate or throw away.
To help you out with cleaning out your kids bed and playrooms, Use 3 big boxes with the labels “To put elsewhere”, “To donate”, “Trash”. It makes organizing the kids bed and playroom much easier.
Oh, let the children help organizing their rooms and clothes. You are never to young to learn.
4 Buy some new clothes
Because you cleaned out their closets, it’s time to buy some new clothes to start clean and fresh this schoolyear. Also remember to buy some clothes that they will need for their hobbies and for swimclasses and gymclasses at school. If they still have enough stuff, don’t buy new.
5 Buy school supplies
The kids bedrooms and playrooms are now completely organized and clean, so now you know exactly what to buy for the next school year. You will also get a list from school, with supplies they will need. Let’s get ready for shopping. (If they have already everything, don’t buy new) – You could even wait until the first week of school to buy these stuff, because there will be more discount, but for my ease of mind, I prefer buying in the vacation period
Keep the receipts of everything you’ve bought, just in case the school don’t allow the kind of items that you have bought.
6 Arrange school and hobby transportation
Arrange transportation for the new schoolyear, if you need to care of a bus subscription or carpool with some other parents or they just go by bike. My daughter her school is a bike ride away, so she doesn’t need a bus subscription. Take care of it, so your children get safe to school.
7 Arrange daycare and other babysitting services
Arrange before and after school daycare, my daughter goes in the morning to daycare, before she goes to school, because I leave to early to my job. After school I arranged babysitting services with my parents for a couple of hours. What are you going to arrange?
Maybe you need other babysitting services as well ,like for your children’s hobbies or in the weekend
8 Make sure for a safe environment and transportation
Safety issues, check if your kid has a fluo vest, a helmet for the bike, some reflectors, … to get safe to school. I also check the bike of my daughter and make sure that the lights and everything is working fine. I also took a picture of the bike and wrote down some indications, if the bike gets stolen, I have a little bit more grip, to get it found again. (Or let it chip by the police)
In the beginning of the schoolyear the school will give you a paper to note if your kid has allergies, health problems, … and case of emergency numbers. Make sure they are up to date. Check also your health insurance for discounts and offers on safety measures.
9 Be on top of school information
School information, a lot of times my daughter tells me things about stuff at school and it don’t have a clue what so ever. But after a while, I noticed a lot of stuff was posted on the schools website and Facebook page, that I didn’t knew.
- So follow your schools Facebook page for instant updates
- Put the website of the school under favorites and you will get the latest news.
- Also make a mail folder to organize all the newsletters from your children’s school
- Make also an offline place or folder to store the papers your children get from school.
10 Make a routine schedule for your children
Make a routine schedule for your children of what they have to do in the mornings and in the evenings, like tasks, homework, making bed, brushing teeth, … It makes sure they have routine and now what you expect of them.
Every year I put some more things on the list, that they can do independently.
These lists include playtime, chores, homework, hobbies, screentime, morning and eveningroutine, …
Talk about this routine with your children, so they know what to expect during the schoolyear
11 Discuss allowance
Allowance, I don’t say you have to this, but we have an agreement with our daughter, that we give a monthly allowance, if she does her chores and does her homework.
We don’t have cash enough in house to give it every week, so we give it each month. It’s not much, but for me it’s the basic steps to learn the basic concept about money.
12 Print the papers of your health insurance company (mutuality)
Print the papers from your health insurance in case of school trips youth clubs, safety guides, sportclubs, … so you want forget to use them and get some refunds. If you don’t do it know, you will forget.
Last week of the vacation period before getting back to school
13 Sign up your children for hobbies
Get your kid into those sportclubs and youthclubs, some of them already started in august, but some start in the beginning of September, be on the look out.
14 Put all the dates in a calendar
Put al the dates of events of your children’s youth club or sport club in your calendar, so you don’t forget important dates. Do the same with your calender from school.
Normally in the end of august or the beginning of September there will be a parentsmeeting for the start of the schoolyear, so make sure you note that well in your agenda.
This is a really important step, that helped me a lot previous schoolyear.
15 Label as many things as you can
Label as many things as you can, like sports clothing, lunchboxes, bags, … and so on. You will definetyly help your self and the teachers.
Their are good websites out there that make personal labels for you or make clothing stamps.
16 Mealprep the first week of school
Mealprep the first week of school. I meal prep all the time, but for the first week of school I make sure I make it extremely easy for myself and take extra effort in the children’s lunchboxes.
I make sure I also have everything for a healthy lunch.
Does your children need new lunchboxen or drinking cups? Put it on your shopping list. As well as healthy lunch ideas.
17 Take passport pictures of your children
Take passport photos of your children, because you will need them for several things during the schoolyear, like friendshipbooks, like memberships of sportclubs, …
You will need them more than you think, I noticed it last year.
18 Make your first batch of children’s birthday presents
Make sure you have a first batch of childrens presents for birthday parties, I contacted @babymeubeltjes for this, they make gorgeous keychains. My daughter and her friends are on the age that they give money, but I always try to find a way, to give it in an orginal form.
I learned this step from last year, because before I always remember the day itself, oh shit, I need a present for a birthday party. Now I have some instant presents ready if I don’t have time to buy one beforehand.
Check out their website www.babymeubeltjes.be
Last day of summer vacation before going back to school
19 Put the children early in bed
Make sure that the last week of the vacation, that they get in bed on a descent time , get them back a little bit in routine, before the schoolyear starts and they all well rested for the beginning of it.
20 Make their lunchbox, schoolbag, …
Make their swimbag, gymbag, lunchbox and schoolbag, make sure everything is set for the first day of school.
Also prepare everything for transportation (bike, fluo, …) and lay down the clothes that they will wear the next day.
I use funny lunchbox quotes to put in their lunchbox. Your children will love it.
The first school week of going back to school
If you’ve done all the previous steps, the only thing to do the first week of school is help them with covering their books.
21 Cover their books
Help your children with covering their books with papers and putting labels on the books.
Conclusion back to school guide for parents
If you might forgot something, don’t worry you still have time, but a lot of stress is of my back, when I do this in the summer period.
There are probably things that I forgot in these list, if so let me know in the comments so I could complete this list?
But I’m sure that if you follow these back to school guidelines as parent, you are going to rock this schoolyear.
Here is a small handy checklist to keep nearby when the schoolyear almost starts.
